Lagos Unveils first set of Electric Public Buses

The Lagos State Government on the 1st if May, 2023, through it's number one citizen announced the introduction of electric buses into its Mass Transit Master Plan. This is a significant move towards modernizing the transportation sector in Lagos and reducing the city's carbon footprint.

The electric buses are part of the state's increased efforts to modernize every sector of Lagos, including transportation. Lagos, being the commercial hub of Nigeria, has been grappling with transportation challenges for years. The introduction of electric buses is a step in the right direction towards addressing these challenges.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-olu, @jidesanwoolu in a tweet from his official Twitter handle expressed that,...."With the ability to travel 280km at full charge, taking into account our unique travel times in Lagos, our electric buses are a game-changer. With an average daily usage of 200km by existing BRTs, there is no need to fear that the buses can stop while in transit.

This aspect of the MTMP is in collaboration with @Oando_PLC. As there would be the need to intermittently power the buses, Oando Clean Energy Limited will strategically provide universal chargers at public places like malls and gas stations.

The electric buses are eco-friendly and have zero carbon emissions, making them a more sustainable option than traditional diesel-powered buses. They are also expected to offer a smoother ride, providing a more comfortable experience for passengers.

The introduction of electric Buses is part of a wider plan to improve the state's transportation system, including the development of new roads, bridges and rails lines. The goal is to create a transportation system that is efficient, reliable and sustainable.

As more cities around the world embrace electric Buses, Lagos state is taking the right step towards developing a greener and more sustainable future.
